“We would borrow a toilet, and take it to Sustainable Okotoks presentations. Sitting on the toilet we would deliver the ‘throne speech’ on sustainability beginning with a biography on toilet inventor Thomas Crapper – to simplify and make more compelling the linkage between our resources and our common future. And it was typical of how we approached plan-making and implementation: creative, disarming, honest, irreverent, highly entertaining, thought-provoking, and mind-stretching. To engage people in thinking about the future, and ‘doing things’ beyond the talk, we understood the relationship between being compelling in talk, and achieving the compelling in action.”

In 1998, the Town of Okotoks became one of the first municipalities in the world to establish a growth model linked to infrastructure development and environmental carrying capacity (Sheep River) when it adopted a new Municipal Development Plan. Communications creativity, which Chris led, was central to formation and implementation of the vision. More than 100 initiatives have been undertaken, many of them ground-breaking. Winner – eight provincial, national, and/or international awards – Sustainable Okotoks Policy- 1998-2006.
